Come get down with us at Bar 303 for a night of African world fusion music, featuring American musical virtuoso Chris Berry and friends supported by local multi-instrumentalist Roderick McLeod and Celestial Strings. This first-time collaboration is a special opportunity to experience the depth and message of ancient instruments passed on from West African and Zimbabwean traditions, played by world-class musicians in their fields.

ABOUT CHRIS BERRY

Grammy award winner Chris Berry is an eclectic singer and songwriter, multi-instrumentalist virtuoso, and high-energy performer and teacher. From his humble beginning during Robert Mugabe’s regime in Zimbabwe, he has blasted his powerful Afro-infused sound around the World for over twenty years; rocking audiences from NYC’s Irving Plaza to sold out stadiums in South Africa and Sydney Australia’s famous Opera House. He has released over a dozen albums; scored the soundtrack for three films; and has been collaborating and performing with some of the World’s best performers including Eminem, Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, Senegalese Afro-Pop sensation Yousoou N’dour, Cuban Legends Los Munequitos de Mantanzas, Jazz artist Paul Winter, Jamaican rhythm and production duo Sly (Dunbar) and Robbie (Shakespeare), Fugee’s producer Handel Tucker, and many more.

In the last few years Chris has collaborated with Steve Kimock, members of the Brazilian Girls, Baaba Maal, Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mutukudzi, Manu Dibango, Xavier Rudd, String Cheese Incident, Peter Apfelbaum, Zivanai Masango, Dom Lali; and spent six months working and recording with the Central African Republic Pygmies to score the soundtrack for the film “Oka!”

ABOUT RODERICK MCLEOD AND CELESTIAL STRINGS

Roderick is a drummer/percussionist who discovered the Kora, (the African harp-lute) when travelling extensively throughout West Africa. During and since this time he has immersed himself in the mysterious beauty of the Kora and its music, and studied the Kora with great players such as Toumani Diabate and Adam Doughty. On this night Roderick will be performing with Cellist Arvo Arvanitakis in their duo named “Celestial Strings”. Together they create blissful, enchanting music that captivates listeners.
