Katankin/ Dan Cully/ Victor Jay- Singer-songwriter night

  • 303 303 High Street Northcote, VIC, 3070 Australia (map)

Join three of Melbourne's finest singer-songwriters as they share with you their stories, poetry, craft and passion, at the iconic Bar 303 in Northcote.

Dan Cully
Dan is a Melbourne based artist who draws on inspiration from the natural world, watching how life and nature move in an interconnected way. Themes of vast landscapes and fresh mountain streams inform the creation process of this music. An intention in Daniel's style is to connect with mystical luminous forces that reach out and inform our reality, creeping, and twisting like a vine, reaching, through the dampness and darkness towards the light. The intersection where sorrow and pure bliss become one is an experience which has sparked the desire within Daniel, to further integrate aspects of his world which are difficult to understand. This friction has been directing his life into a path of more balance and empathy. One way of coming to terms with that tension is by creating art.

Katankin
Katankin is the solo moniker of singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer Helen Catanchin. Formally trained as a jazz singer, Katankin was born from Helen’s desire to return to her singer-songwriter roots. A phonetic spelling of her Russian surname (allowing its correct pronunciation for the first time in the singer’s life), Katankin further symbolises this return to one’s roots, to one’s true self.
Helen’s unique and compelling voice, along with her poetic and poignant, cuts-to-the-bone songwriting, put their unmistakable stamp on Katankin’s songs. She writes and sings unabashedly and with great vulnerability, from the darkest recesses, wading through love, despair, loathing, fear, lust, and rage, and then up, up, up into the light.

Victor Jay
Victor Jay is a high school math teacher who's expression is influenced by the Australian Festival scene and a surfer's playlist that involves artists such as Xavier Rudd and Jack Johnson. He is an unpredictable but honest man of talent who is always experimenting, learning new things and writing songs along the way. Victor frequently explores the sounds of the cello, percussion, his guitar and his passionate voice to deliver songs of healing, experience, and colourful dreams.
