bohjass release new album 'It asks nothing'
with special guests....toqui...mirror clippers and mick power band the new bohjass album "it asks nothing" is a dark and brooding, expansive and personal meditation on the personal and public existential crisis of unknowing in a world where the obvious is subliminally excoriated by everything from the sublime to the ridiculous...you cannot ask because it asks nothing...bohjass is a band of many years and hopefully many more to come with the wonderfully talented Alastair Watts, Belinda Woods, Oscar France, Grae Brimes, Mick Power, luigi portararo, Chris Lewis, Daniel Daniel and Timothy Mark Pledger
“one of the most talked about bands in the Melbourne Improv Scene... Bohjass has consistently thrilled audiences with their pursuit of a new musical ground that combines highly emotional yet complex expressionistic composed music with free blowing sections; A wildly diverse mixture of textures that shape the soundscapes where Bohjass play.” ABC
Mirror Clippers are a fresh two-piece heavy power band based in Naarm/Melbourne. Feeding off cooped up energy from deep inside the C19 closet, Mirror Clippers rock their very own brand of heavy riffs, doom stoner punk sounds inspired by kraut rock legends CAN, heavy hitters Carusella, stoner rock gurus Earth and unapologetic
punks Gang of Four. Back in May 2023, Israeli born drummer Daniel Brates (James Ellis, Matt Joe Gow, Bohjass) approached fuzz fuelled French born guitar player and singer-songwriter SiB (aka Adrien Siboulet) and suggested they give a red hot go at playing really loud and sweaty rock and roll as a duo. Both musicians have called Melbourne home for over 15 years and share a deep love for obscure psychedelic garage and punk rock bands from all ages and horizons, as long as they hit hard, dive into deep grooves with heavy tones and contrasts. They both thrive on sonic tension and release.
Tension & Release is the title of their forthcoming debut album, which was recorded at Soundpark at the end of September 2023.
Mirror Clippers is not just a concept band name Daniel and SiB came up with, it's a sound, it's a smell, it's a way of walking, talking, dancing, bleeding and head banging... and, ultimately, a way of pulling out the mirror shards of guilt while having a ball, unleashing your demons and celebrating life.
Toqui are a 8-piece semi acoustic orchestral jazz ensemble filled with darkly cinematic horn-and-cello-laden arrangements following pianist and composer Oscar France. Their music takes elements of folk, electronic and jazz music, with a focus on blending acoustic instruments together and instilling expansive scenes of the natural world bristling with life.
Like baroque minstrels, this suite of beautiful, bodacious and talented musicians dance up the score on a witched night where music and magic entwine.
Having released their debut album ‘Wire Owl’ in May this year, Toqui are on a journey to create, perform and record more of their magical music.
They have developed a solid following at their residencies at Bar 303’s Jass Hub in Northcote, the intimate Ragtime Tavern in Preston and other local venues. They performed recently at the Castlemaine Jazz Festival following their sold out album launch at the Jazz Lab.
Mick Power band Mick Power’s compositions are intense and subtle, stretched out and concise, harmonically complex and simple at their core. The Mick Power Band plays a unique combination of instrumental songs written for an ensemble of improvisers. Celebrating electronic and rock textures, the band presents a cinematic fusion-scape which is dynamic and emotional.
