The New Monos + The Afrobiotics w/ DJ Jumps

  • 303 303 High Street Northcote, VIC, 3070 Australia (map)

The New Monos and The Afrobiotics are teaming up to present a double bill at Bar 303 on Friday the 11th of August, for a night of Latin rhythms and Sabar-inspired Afrobeat. DJ Jumps will keep the tropical rhythms going on the dancefloor.

With their roots in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 7 piece outfit The New Monos combine inspiration from their South American heritage and diverse musical experience with the flavour of contemporary Buenos Aires, mixing reggae, folkloric music, Cumbia, rock, Rumba, hip-hop and Latin beats, all expressed with the passion of the Tango.

The New Monos have a new album Moron Life, created with talented producer Matias "Chavez" Mendez from Argentina. The first single Trampera was released in late 2019 and the album was released February 2022; this album shows the fusion and variety of the band mixing the urban and futuristic artwork of P_S_X_Y and Pibe Manzana.

The Afrobiotics play Afrobeat but not like you’ve heard before. Listeners will recognise the familiar undulating interwoven rhythms and fiery energy, but also discover a more intimate and collaborative sound incorporating Sabar rhythms from Senegal.

Founded as a side-project from the much-larger Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, The Afrobiotics (fka The Public Opinion Six) began as a way of writing new material and getting inside the sounds of Afrobeat, but it didn’t take long for the six musicians to discover they had found something unique and special - a sheer love of playing together in a much more intimate setting, creating a more well-rounded dialog and interplay between each other. Where The Public Opinion delivers a dynamic and captivating show, The Afrobiotics is less sensory and more spiritual.

DJ Jumps has amassed a huge collection of African and Latin vinyl over his many years touring with The Cat Empire.
